Orton, Kearns lose in playoffs

Kearns earned a No. 3 seed in the state playoffs by winning three games late in the season. Taylorsville beat Kearns by 38 points on the Cougars’ home floor at the end of the regular season, however, and the Cougars made an early exit from the tournament in a loss to Lone Peak. Micaelee Orton led Kearns with 16 points in the postseason appearance.

Stansbury finishes strong, exits tourney

After a strong finish in the second half of the season, Stansbury lost in the first round of the class 3A state tournament to Juab. The Stallions started the season with a 3-9 record, but then went 6-3 in their next nine games. Junior guard Erika Alvey finished the season with a scoring average of 13 points per game, which was 11th-best in 3A. She also made 1.6 3-pointers per game, which ranked seventh in 3A.

Strong season finish falls short for Tooele

The Tooele Buffaloes were eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to Bear River in the final game of the season. Tooele had won three out of four games going into that game to stay alive in the playoff hunt, but their luck ran out. Seniors Becca Smaellie and Lizzie Stewart each finished the season with a scoring average of more than 9 points per game. Stewart finished 11th in class 5A in steals and assists.
