Coming into this season, the Granger girls basketball team had made the playoffs only once since 2003. All signs pointed to another disappointing this year.
With just five games remaining in the regular season, Granger was 1-4 in region play and two games behind Viewmont for the final Region 2 playoff spot. Then the Lancers turned it on, and just in time. They won three of their final five region games to force a play-in game against Viewmont.

In that game, Granger again looked primed for disappointment. The Lancers trailed the Vikings by 10 points at halftime and by 8 going into the fourth quarter. Once more, the Lancers got rolling at just the right time. Granger outscored Viewmont 19-6 in the final period to punch its ticket to the state tournament.
The Lancers fell to Riverton 49-34 in the first round of the tournament Tuesday, but the season was still a success.
"It has been a really good season," Granger senior guard Caroline Yorgason said. "We have had some struggles, had some ups and downs. We pushed through, stuck together and made it to state."
Yorgason played no small role in Granger’s run to the playoffs.
Entering the tournament, she led the team in scoring with 13 points per game. Throughout the season, Yorgason was one of the more well-rounded players in the region. She finished ranked in the top 12 in Class 5A in points, 3-pointers made, steals and assists.
"She has always had that potential," Granger coach Aaron Cousins said. "She got a chance this year and she took advantage. She is a big part of what we do, and I don’t think we would be where we are without her."
For Yorgason, the most exciting thing the season was the growth she made as a player and as a person.
"I have definitely become a better hustler and a harder worker. My teammates are always pushing me to do my best," Yorgason said. "I have become a better basketball player and I have really enjoyed learning these skills."
Yorgason is one of five Granger players graduating this year. Despite their departure, those seniors have left their mark.
They made the Lancers a relevant team again.
