Taylorsville • There was no postseason drama in the second game of the Class 4A girls’ basketball tournament, as Bonneville easily outpaced Olympus for a 49-27 victory in the first round.
The Lakers showed up ready to play Monday at Salt Lake Community College, opening up a 23-8 lead by midway through the second quarter. It drew up memories of Bonneville’s first-round loss to Springville last year - only this time, the Lakers got to be on the winning side of the blowout.

"It feels great," coach Mike Russell said. "I think the way we started the game is a great measurement of where we’re at. I think Olympus is a good team, and we played them really well."
The Titans had a tough time cracking Bonneville’s zone schemes from the beginning, making only one field goal in the first half. If not for 11 free throws by Rachel VanderToolen, the score could have been much uglier.
The Lakers, by contrast, sliced up Olympus in many different ways. Leading scorer Emilie Volk had 11, but so did forward Kayla Eilertson. Krista Barker scored nine points, and Courtney Porter added eight.
"We don’t just have one go-to player," Volk said. "We can set a play up for anyone, because we have so much talent. Everyone can contribute."
Olympus shot better in the second half, but couldn’t erode Bonneville’s commanding lead. By the end of the third quarter, the Lakers led 41-20 and cruised the rest of the way. VanderToolen didn’t score in the second half, but still finished with a team-high 11 points.
Bonneville will play its quarterfinal game against Timpanogos on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.
