Bingham battles for playoff positioning

Entering the week with a 14-6 record, 5-4 in Region 4, the Bingham girls were in flux, meaning their state tournament opponent could be Taylorsville, Hunter or Kearns. Bingham split a pair of games before its season-ending home game with Lone Peak on Tuesday. Fourteen players scored in a 74-32 win over Lehi, led by sophomore Shelby Richards. The Miners dropped a 41-34 decision at region-leading Riverton, led by Ashton Henderson’s 11.

American Fork claws its way into contention

It was the shot heard ’round the Region 4 basketball circles as American Fork pulled away to defeat a previously unbeaten Region 4 Riverton squad 49-37. When Ashley Baugh and Cassidy Fraughton perform well, the Cavemen are in another category, and the juniors combined for 23 in the win. The Cavemen have come on strong late in the year, and no matter their region finish, they will be a tough one in the upcoming 5A tournament.

Johnson’s double-double leads Pleasant Grove past Lehi

While there will be no playoff run this season, the Vikings are still playing hard down the stretch. Sophomore Makenna Miles scored 12 points in a 50-35 road loss at Lehi to give Vikings fans a glimpse of the future. Senior Britney Johnson gave the fans a performance to remember with 16 points and 14 rebounds in the Vikings’ 52-42 win over Lehi. There are just too many injuries and new players in the rotation this season for Pleasant Grove to make any kind of run in a very difficult region.

Riverton rebounds after only region blemish

Riverton fell behind early and could never recover as American Fork handed the Silverwolves their first region loss with a 49-37 trouncing. The 49 points allowed was the first time a Silverwolves squad allowed more than 40 since a Jan. 17 56-51 win against the same Cavemen squad. Riverton got back to its defensive ways in a 41-34 win over Bingham as Andy Denos and Whitney Saunders combined for 21 points. Riverton and its downright stingy defense await either Granger or Viewmont for a first-round game in the 5A tourney.

Lone Peak gets hot as 5A tournament approaches

Winners of five of their last six games, the Lone Peak Knights picked up a pair of crucial region victories: a 50-35 win over Pleasant Grove and a 34-33 thriller over American Fork. Team depth was evident in both wins as Cami Simons, Karlie Taylor and Talyn Bevel scored in double figures against the Vikings. While no player reached double figures against American Fork, the Knights had just enough in the tank to hold on. Lone Peak is playing its best ball of the season, and any upcoming opponent will have its hands full.

Arviso stands out in Lehi’s final few games

At 5-foot-1, Lehi senior Kenzie Arviso doesn’t always make a huge impression, but her career high of 21 in a 52-42 loss to Pleasant Grove must have been satisfying for the senior in this 1-19 season. Arviso had 7 points in a 74-32 loss to Bingham early in the week. Lehi is packed full of players who have made an impact this season.
