Despite a terrible preseason, West has put together a rather successful Region 2 season. At 4-4, they are in third place in the region and are looking to hold off Kearns at 3-5. Kearns does hold the tiebreaker between the two since they have two wins over West. The Panthers got to where they are by beating Granger 39-27 Feb. 10. Devin Price scored 11 points and brought in 14 rebounds in the win. Alex Espinoza scored 13 points.
Highland could have locked up position 2
The Rams entered last week in second place in Region 6 and had an opportunity to practically lock that position up. They stepped closer to that with a 52-34 win over Clearfield Feb. 7 in which Max Bradshaw and Todd Connolly each scored 12 points. But then things got more complicated when Woods Cross beat Highland 59-57 in overtime Feb. 10. Liam Thomas and David Divver combined for 29 points in the loss. The loss put Highland, East and Woods Cross in a three-way tie for second place in the region. Woods Cross and Highland have split their two matchups. Woods Cross and East have split theirs. East beat Highland once and the two teams meet Friday, Feb. 17 to either clear things up or make them more complicated.
East has inroad on 2nd place in region
Of the three teams locked in a tie for second place in Region 6 — East, Highland and Woods Cross — the Leopards seem to have the best chance of having it for themselves. While Woods Cross and Highland still have to visit first-place Bountiful, East has a home date with Highland and last-place Cyprus. East beat Clearfield 51-43 on Feb. 10 behind 24 points and seven rebounds from Parker Van Dyke.
Judge has perfect run in Region 10
The Bulldogs charged through Region 10 without losing and only got scared once when Park City lost by only three points. No one else lost to Judge by less than 10 points. The Bulldogs ended the season by beating Park City a second time, 71-60 Feb. 10. Jacob Gondrezick scored 26 points with five 3-pointers and Christian Stark came out of nowhere with 16 points and seven rebounds. Now the Bulldogs get a home game against Dixie in the first round of the 3A state tournament Feb. 18.
Park City backing its way into the playoffs
The good news for Park City is that it is once again heading to the playoffs. In three years with Caleb Fine as coach, the Miners have been a playoff team three times. The bad news is two-fold: they’re once again going to be on the road and they are entering the playoffs as losers of two straight. Juan Diego beat Park City 53-40 Feb. 7. Jono Schettler and Britton Buford each scored 14 points in the loss. Buford and Schettler combined for 38 points in a 71-60 loss to Judge Memorial Feb. 10.
Rowland Hall struggles to end the season
The Winged Lions lost nine straight to end the season in a last-place tie in Region 14 with Maeser Prep. In a 70-52 loss to Wasatch Academy on Feb. 10, Wesley Austin scored 23 points to lead all scorers. Zeryab Sial added eight points. Austin ended the year as one of the 2A classification’s top scorers at 15.2 points per game.
