Cyprus’ dominance continues
Three players scored in double figures for Cyprus as the Pirates defeated Highland 52-35 on Friday. It was the 13th consecutive win for the Pirates, and their 17th win in 18 games. Entering the week, Cyprus had won all of its region games by at least 13 points. With the regular season wrapping up on Tuesday, staying healthy has to be the biggest goal for the team right now.

Granger taking advantage of Viewmont slump
Granger has won two of its past three games and is now tied with Viewmont, which has lost three straight games, for fourth place in Region 2. Both teams have two games left, so a win or loss could make all the difference in who goes to the tournament and who goes home. There is also an outside chance that Granger, Kearns and Viewmont finish in a three-way tie with only two playoff spots up for grabs. If that happens, Granger’s fate could be decided by a play-in game or possibly a coin flip.
Hunter shores up second seed
Hunter will be representing Region 2 as its No. 2 seed in the state tournament. The Wolverines still had a shot at forcing a tie for first place, but they got trounced by Taylorsville on Thursday. Hunter closes the region schedule with home games against West and Granger. The games will serve as a good opportunity to find scoring help for senior Dezz Ramos.
Kearns in for now, can’t falter
If the playoffs started now, Kearns would be the third seed from Region 2. But with two games left for each team in the region, a lot can change. Kearns plays at Granger on Thursday, and that has turned into a very important game with Granger being just one game behind Kearns. The Cougars cap the season on Tuesday against Taylorsville. With a win against Granger, Kearns would clinch a playoff spot. The Cougars will probably get in anyway, but they would much rather make it a sure thing.
Stansbury in for wild finish
Stansbury finds itself in a dead heat with crosstown rival Tooele for the fourth spot in Region 11. Both teams came into the week with 4-6 region records, but the Stallions have a slightly more favorable schedule. They played winless Grantsville on Tuesday and conclude the season against Ben Lomond, which entered the week with a 3-7 region record, on Thursday. If Stansbury can win both, it can do no worse than tie for fourth place.
Region a breeze for T-ville
With the season Taylorsville has had, it is safe to say the Warriors have been the Class 5A surprise team of the year. It isn’t that anyone thought they would be bad, but few expected them to be this good. The Warriors have won eight straight games and 13 of their last 14. They have simply run the table in Region 2. Taylorsville probably isn’t quite at the level of a team like Syracuse, but if they meet in the tournament, you never know what can happen in one game.
