West Valley City • January has not been kind to the Granger girls’ basketball team.
Winners of just one of their last eight, Lancers coach Aaron Cousins put the girls through their three hardest practices of the season prior to Wednesday’s game with Viewmont.
The team responded with a season-high eight players scoring, led by 6-foot-2 center Lile Havili’s 15, as the Lancers earned a 47-42 Region 2 win over Viewmont.
“The last three practices, coach has been telling us that we need to have all-out effort in every game,” said Havili. “I think the difference tonight was we just wanted it more than them.”
Havili picked up two quick fouls, and played sparingly through the first half, but the Lancers showed they had other players capable of stepping up. Elizabeth Wynn scored six first-half points and seldom-used Anela Alagic hit the only 3-pointer of the game as Granger led 20-18 at the half.
Viewmont stayed in the game behind the play of Caitlyn Larsen, who scored six points in the third, on her way to a team-high 14. Larsen drained her only 3-pointer at the 1:00 mark of that period, but Havili nailed a pair of free throws.
“I think the tough practices helped,” said Cousins. “Viewmont kept fighting back, but our girls said, hey, we can get it back even if we make a mistake.”
Mistakes were few and far between in the final period, as the Lancers nailed 10 of 13 free throws to earn their first region win since Jan. 12.
