University of Utah-bound quarterback Chase Hansen was named Thursday the Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year.

The Lone Peak star led the Knights to a 14-0 record and their first Class 5A state championship, along the way passing for 3,090 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,410 yards and 17 touchdowns.

The award makes Hansen, who also has a 3.89 GPA, a candidate for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year, which will be announced in December.

Hansen is the second straight quarterback to win the award. Last year, Mountain Crest's Alex Kuresa earned the honor. In 2009, Utes running back Harvey Langi, then at Bingham, won the award as a junior.

Hansen is also a starter for the Lone Peak basketball team and helped the Knights to a Class 5A basketball championship last year. He has said he will enroll at Utah in the spring to participate in spring drills before going on an LDS Church mission. —
