Class 5A • Davis runs through Region 4 to title

Three teams in Region 4 — Pleasant Grove, Lone Peak and Lehi — battled one another to a tie for first place. The Vikings and the Knights had combined to win the past four championships, so it seemed the title-winner was coming from down south. But the Darts peaked at the end of the season, winning three matches in four sets or less and sweeping the Pioneers for their first championship since 1975.

Class 4A • Timpview turns around program

The Thunderbirds were afterthoughts in 2010, winning only one region game as they had the previous two years. This season, Timpview's fortunes changed thanks to an up-and-coming crop of talent and strong leadership by coach Kristen Bailey and the two seniors. The team improved from 7-13 to 30-5, tied for a region championship and ended up beating its biggest rival this season, Salem Hills, in a five-set thriller.

Class 3A • Morgan tops Snow Canyon in battle of titans

When Snow Canyon moved down to 3A, it set a seemingly fated course for two defending champions to meet in the finals. The state tournament went mostly as expected until the two legendary programs met in the championship. Morgan swept the Warriors with surprising ease, defending its own title and ending a five-year run for Snow Canyon.

Class 2A • Richfield works over 2A competition

The Wildcats were far from a sure thing to win, even though a move down to 2A helped. Enterprise beat Richfield twice, and the team worried that it wouldn't be able to handle the rigors of state competition. But the Wildcats came together at the finish, beating the Wolves in the semifinals and topping defending champ San Juan in four sets for the program's first championship since 2008.

Class 1A • Monticello shocks powerhouse Rich

The Buckaroos hadn't won a title in more than two decades. In that span, the Rebels had won 16. But history ended up mattering little in this one — Monticello was the better team. Good hitting and blocking by the Buckaroos kept Rich off its game in the championship, and they soon had the sweep. It was a stunning statement for Monticello, which asserts solid footing as a power in the 1A hierarchy.
