Prep football: Fremont ends second finals berth in disappointment

Almost one year to the day when Fremont watched its 2010 season tick away, the team had to live it again.

The score ended up being a little closer, but the championship felt just as far away.

"I think we're a better team than we showed today," coach Kory Bosgieter said.

There was little solace in that notion, however, as the Silver Wolves swallowed their second straight loss in the Class 5A title game. The 41-21 loss to Lone Peak was a long time coming, and by the time the game ended, some cried, but most just solemnly shuffled off the field.

Last season, Fremont had the misfortune of running into perhaps the best football team Utah has ever produced as Bingham rolled in a 30-7 rout. This year, the star-crossed Silver Wolves couldn't stop quarterback Chase Hansen, known in some circles as the best player in the state. Hansen accumulated 475 yards of total offense and five total touchdowns.

"I think we started out flat, then Chase picked us apart," lineman Jake Gallegos said. "When they came out that third quarter and stopped us, then they scored, I thought we gave up a little bit."

But it wasn't just Hansen. The Lone Peak defense played one of its best games and kept Fremont's offense at bay for most of the contest.

The killer stretch for the Silver Wolves was three late possessions in the third and fourth quarters. All three ended in Lone Peak interceptions.

There were bright spots for Fremont. Jordan Preator had a 98-yard kickoff return, and Nick Vigil had a 55-yard touchdown run to put the heat on Lone Peak early. At the end, Fremont showed some life as well, as quarterback Cooper Kelley raced for a touchdown, and the team recovered a subsequent onside kick.

It was just between those bursts where the Silver Wolves lost the game.

"You've got to give Lone Peak all the credit," Vigil said. "They shut us down. We fought at the end, but they're a great team and we didn't really play our best. Both years we didn't play our best."

Even if their final game wasn't exactly a tribute to what they accomplished, the Fremont seniors elevated their team to this level, Bosgieter said.

It was only a few years ago when the Silver Wolves were basement dwellers in Region 1, but the senior class helped build them up to a championship contender.

Of course, Fremont wished that the class could've gone out as championship winners. But with a strong precedent, the legacy they started could have an impact long after they are gone.

"Our seniors worked harder than anyone I've ever known," Preator said. "They taught all the juniors — not just me, all the juniors — work ethic and commitment. We're gonna miss them."
