Cyprus • The Pirates beat Clearfield in their final game of the regular season to move into a three-way tie with East and Highland for third place in Region 6. Senior Patricia Youngyen had 26 assists and Lori Parkinson came through with 16 kills in the 3-1 win over the Falcons. Cyprus (5-11, 4-6) won four of its last six matches to jump into the 4A playoff mix as a No. 3 seed.

Granger • The winless Lancers finished the season in last place in Region 2 and struggled to find consistency on offense. Defensively, the smaller Lancers routinely got beaten at the net, which put a ton of pressure on their back-row defenders. While the Lancers were scrappy and fought hard this season, it was the lack of height that proved to be the team's undoing.

Hunter • The resurgent Wolverines (11-13) head into the 5A state tournament on a roll. Hunter has won five of its last six matches and beat out Kearns for second place in Region 2. Outside hitter Tess Matagi is a force; she had 17 kills vs. West and Kearns, and Dezz Ramos contributed 20 assists. The Wolverines are a confident bunch right now and will square off with defending state champion Lone Peak in Friday's first round of the 5A state tournament.

Kearns • With their 3-1 loss to Hunter last Thursday, the Cougars (11-15) finished in third place in Region 2 and have lost seven of their past nine matches. The team is struggling defensively and its passing game has been off target. Nonetheless, the Cougars are making their second straight appearance at the 5A state tournament and will take on second-seeded Pleasant Grove in round 1.

Stansbury • For the third year in a row, the Stallions were able to qualify for the state tournament, but another first-round loss spoiled this noteworthy accomplishment. And as in past seasons, Stansbury rebounded with a consolation victory but was eliminated in four games by Hurricane in the next round. Stansbury finishes the season with a 20-11 record and was the runner-up to Morgan in Region 11.

Tooele • Reaching the postseason for the first time since 2006 was a big accomplishment for the Buffaloes. This struggling program hasn't had much to cheer about in recent seasons, so a 12-win season came as a welcome relief. And even though the fourth-seeded Buffs were swept by Delta and Judge Memorial in last week's 3A tournament, the team gained valuable tournament experience.
