Orem • They were two points away from being out of the title chase, but on Saturday, the San Juan Broncos will still have a chance to defend their Class 2A volleyball title.

The Broncos got out of a close shave against Waterford, which pushed them to the brink in a five-set (25-19, 13-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13) victory in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The situation seemed dire for San Juan, but the team avoided a trip to the consolation bracket by winning five straight points in the deciding fifth set.

"After last year taking state, we got to the finals so easily — we basically dominated everyone," senior setter Simone Shumway said. "I think we were feeling it might be the same way, and maybe at one point we were accepting that we weren't playing well. But it's my senior year, so I wasn't going to accept that."

After marching to a first-set victory, San Juan hit a mid-match lull, scoring only 13 points in the second set. The Broncos were whipped particularly by Waterford outside hitter Chandler Rosenberg, who rained down kills from the outside for the entire match.

San Juan coach Cassie Moon also said her team wasn't passing or communicating particularly well, and it caused them to lose some momentum.

"We're definitely capable of passing better, we showed it late in the game," Moon said. "We got shut out in Game 2, and we had to really work to get back in it."

Shumway helped the offense push the ball closer to the net, allowing her hitters more control in the front. Teal Palmer led the team with 13 kills, while McKale Simpson and Samantha Giddings each had 10. Even in the fifth set, the Broncos needed a hot streak to come away with a victory. Bree Hosler served her way out of a 13-10 deficit to eventually come up with the winning point on a kill by Palmer.
