Sandy • Cedar added another first to this season's growing list of accomplishments on Friday.

For the first time in a generation of players, Cedar is playing for a state championship.

Makayla Warby's goal in the 77th minute stunned top-seeded and two-time defending state champion Juan Diego 1-0 in a Class 3A semifinal at Jordan High School.

"I was just thinking I've got to score this right now for my team," Warby said of the game-winner that beat Melanie Mecham. "Those [last two] were the longest two minutes of my life."

Cedar (13-3-3), which claimed its first-ever region title this season, has now won three consecutive playoff games for the first time in school history.

Cedar will play in its first state championship game since 1994 today against Region 11 champion Ogden.

Cedar locked down the Soaring Eagle's potent offense and shadowed top scorer Emily Bruder all afternoon.

"Our whole team is just shocked," said Bruder, who had seven goals in the postseason and 26 on the season. "We stepped out onto the field thinking we got this, and it didn't turn out our way. ... We just couldn't finish."

The Lady Reds employed a 4-5-1 defense, with defender Alainey Carter assigned to mark Bruder. Backed by solid play from goalkeeper Tara Shipp, Cedar held Juan Diego scoreless for just the third time this season.

Shipp made two diving saves on Bruder shots in the second half, then survived a flurry of three corner kicks in the final minute.

"We knew they were good, but we knew we are really good, too, especially defensively," Shipp said. "We have been training all season to finish games, and that's what we did today." —
