Sandy • All of St. Joseph's shots early on in the 2A semifinal against Manti on Friday seemed to be just off. Two by midfielder Joanna Matyjasik clanked off the crossbar in the first 10 minutes.

The defending state champions pounded shots at Manti, which, by packing its defense was making things difficult for the second-best scoring team in the classification.

Then Jane Porter took over.

Porter scored goals in the 38th and 63rd minutes to lift St. Joseph to a 2-0 win at Jordan High School and a fourth-straight title game appearance. The Jayhawks will play Waterford on Saturday, which beat Millard earlier in the day and has challenged St. Joseph in the last two 2A championship games as well.

After a long season in which Waterford and St. Joseph emerged as the top two teams from 2A North, it seemed almost inevitable they would meet again at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday at 11 a.m.

"That's how a lot of us like it," Porter said. "They're really good competition."

St. Joseph may find itself facing an even greater challenge, however. The Jayhawks could be without Matyjasik. The star midfielder collided with a Manti player in the 78th minute as both girl leapt for a ball in the air. Matyjasik crumpled onto the hard turf and had to be carried to the sideline. Coach Alexis Salvo said Matyjasik injured her ankle, and he did not know if she would be available against Waterford.

"If we don't have her tomorrow that really, really changes the way we play the game," he said. "But the girls will step up. If she can't play tomorrow we will do it for her."
