Sandy • Waterford scored three first-half goals and its defense didn't allow Millard a shot on goal as the Ravens advanced to their fourth-consecutive 2A championship game.

Each of Waterford's goals in the 3-0 win came within a 14-minute span. Grace Sponaugle headed in a corner kick in the 19th minute, Caroline Coats chipped in a shot on a breakaway run in the 23rd and Jamie Duke scored in the 33rd.

The flurry held Millard, the No. 1 seed from 2A West, at bay.

"We always think not to let down because we don't want to let them score," Duke said.

Coats and Sponaugle are two of three freshmen in the Ravens' starting lineup. Waterford coach Tim Dolbin said this is the most freshman-heavy team he's had at the Sandy private school.

"A lot of good players in that group," Dolbin said.

This season, it's often been freshmen leading the Ravens, who won state championships in 2009 and 2007. Coats scored her team-best 17th goal against the Eagles.

The freshmen have grown quickly into their roles.

"It was hard at the start," Duke said, "because we weren't used to the girls and they didn't know our style."

The Ravens have won seven straight games, and two of their five losses this season came against St. Joseph. Waterford will play St. Joseph in the 2A title game for the third straight season. The teams play at Rio Tinto Stadium at 11 a.m.
