Draper • Skyline continued its run through the Class 4A girls state soccer tournament Tuesday, knocking off defending champion Bonneville 2-1 at Juan Diego Catholic High School.
On the strength of a physical defense and an early goal from midfielder Rachel Wright, the Eagles controlled the tempo of this semifinal match for most of the afternoon.
"It took a lot of pressure off our shoulders and we played a little more calm and more relaxed," Skyline coach Yamil Castillo said.
With a 1-0 lead, Skyline's bruising defense took control of the game, holding the Lakers scoreless until late in the contest. Bonneville coach Rob McDaniel said the Eagles defense was the difference in the game.
"They were more aggressive than we were," McDaniel said. "They had the intensity throughout the game, I think we were a little too relaxed. It's not very often we get a team that's more aggressive than we are and that kind of caught us by surprise."
Skyline was cruising after Natalie Williams nailed an 18-footer to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead midway through the second half. Still, a desperate Lakers team tried to rally in the final 10 minutes of the match.
In the 75th minute Madeline Jensen got the Lakers on the board with a point blank goal, after goalie Alli Spencer dove for the loose ball and came up empty.
However, Spencer would not allow another Bonneville goal, and the Eagles advance to Friday's 4A championship game at Rio Tinto Stadium against Timpanogos.
