Orem • As they say, you have to walk before you can run. Or, in the case of the Wayne Badgers on Monday, before you can score runs.
In the 1A baseball semifinals Monday, the Badgers were walked 15 times, scored 14 runs and scattered six hits in a five-inning, 14-2 win over Tabiona.
"I felt like they tried to pitch around a bunch of our hitters," coach Scott Ellett.
Wayne will play for its fifth 1A championship in six years Tuesday at Utah Valley University at 1 p.m. The Badgers will play Panguitch, which beat West Ridge in the other semifinal.
Wayne and Panguitch split the four-game regular season series.
Against Tabiona, which reached the semifinals for the first time, pitcher Taylor Albrecht struck out five and pitched a one-hitter, giving up his only hit in the fifth inning.
"I was hoping for a no-hitter," Albrecht said, "but it had to happen eventually."
Wayne won three state titles starting in 2006, had its streak interrupted in 2009 and won again last fall also against Panguitch.
Tuesday, the Badgers will start Randy Ellett, the winning pitcher in last year's title game.
Panguitch 17, West Ridge 9 • Panguitch's offense erupted for 12 runs in the second and third innings and the Bobcats advanced to the 1A title game for the fourth straight season.
The Bobcats lost twice in the regular season to West Ridge, and trailed 2-1 after the first inning. But they batted around their lineup each of the next two innings, and finished the game with 12 hits.
Dalan Bennett earned the win for Panguitch.
