The Mountain Crest Mustangs pulled an upset on Wednesday afternoon when they defeated Spanish Fork in the 4A state softball quarterfinals, 3-2. The Mustangs outlasted the Dons in a close game that came down to the final two innings.

Mountain Crest head coach Mike Anderson understands how big of a win this was for his team, especially since the victory came against a perennial powerhouse.

"It's a turning point for our program. We were once 0-11 in our region," Anderson said. "I'm OK with people calling it an upset because before you can be elite, you have to upset somebody."

Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Mountain Crest was able to tie things up on Spanish Fork's fourth error of the game, as Kelsey Benson scored from third. Tessa Sorensen then batted in the winning run on a RBI single that brought Mc-Kenzie Anderson home and advanced the Mustangs into Thursday's state semifinal.

With the luxury of playing in the winners' bracket, Spanish Fork's season is still alive, as the Dons will play Salem Hills on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. After losing in last year's championship game to Tooele, they still have a chance to get a rematch against the Mustangs or the Buffaloes if the cards fall in their favor due to the tournament's double-elimination structure.

For now, Anderson and his team are excited about their win but are keeping everything in context. While Anderson knows its cliche to say his team is taking it one step at a time, it's the only message he can currently preach.

"We're taking this thing from the beginning and one game at a time," Anderson said.

Uintah 6, Westlake 3 • Craven sealed the win for the Uintah Utes when she hit a two-run homer in the top of the tenth inning after Chanel Pace connected on a ground rule double. —
