Girls’ basketball: Syracuse remains unscathed in match of unbeatens

Layton • In a statement game for both teams, Syracuse’s game spoke loudest.

Layton committed 21 turnovers and Syracuse dominated on the boards to defeat the host Lancers 57-41 Friday night in a matchup of the last two unbeatens in Class 5A.

Brittney Martin scored a game-high 23 points despite foul trouble and Makenlee Williams added 15 as the Titans won their 56th consecutive regular-season game and took sole possession on first place in Region 1.

“We came to play, and they came to play,” Martin said. “But we were just so pumped to play this game.”

Added Williams: “And it showed.”

Martin committed two fouls in the first quarter and two more just six seconds apart midway through the third. But the Titans (13-0, 5-0) hardly missed a beat, paced by Williams, who scored eight consecutive points in the third quarter to push the lead to 35-17.

Layton (14-1, 4-1) was within four points midway through the second quarter, but couldn’t find consistent scoring. Two Lancer turnovers just before halftime led to Syracuse baskets and tamed a raucous crowd.

Amber Daly was the only Lancer in double figures, with 15 points. Layton’s 41 points are a season low.

“We’ve struggled here in the past, trying to get out to a good start,” Syracuse coach Rob Reisbeck said. “I think we got over that today. That was the biggest thing.”

Syracuse led by as many as 22, and outrebounded Layton 36-26, led by eight by Courtney Starks.

“We knew if we were going to be successful tonight, we needed to win the rebound war,” Reisbeck said. “They are usually one of the best rebounding teams in the state.”

Martin made 10 of her 20 shots from the field and scored 11 points in the fourth quarter to put the period on the end of Syracuse’s statement
