Morgun Phelps says volumes with the way he carries himself. He screams, he pumps his fist, he generally is the most excitable high school baseball player in the game.

But he also wins. And after a while, it can get under your skin.

"I think it's one of those things where everyone you play wants to beat them so bad, but they try to overdo it," coach Kyle Bundy says. "He gets a little wild, and as a coach, I've faced other players like that, and it drives me crazy."

Phelps is often the shortest player on the field, but no one in Class 2A made a bigger impact. As a pitcher and leadoff hitter for Enterprise, Phelps showed a special fire for the game that helped drive the Wolves to a title, making him The Tribune's MVP choice.

His attitude was not for show: It translated into his work ethic. He'd wake up early to throw before school started. He'd stay after practice for extra batting, pitching or groundballs.

"He definitely kept people going," Bundy says. "He had the most passion and desire to win."

It could be argued that no one did more in the postseason to bring Enterprise a championship. Phelps pitched the maximum 14 innings in the Class 2A tournament, stretching his arm to the point where his fastballs lost their zip. He also was a hitting machine in the two title games against Beaver, going 8-for-10.

Perhaps the most compelling factor about Phelps was he never shied from the high-pressure situations. Last year in the state tournament, San Juan hit him off the mound. When the Wolves had a playoff game against the Broncos this year, he asked Bundy for the ball. Enterprise won the game in the fifth inning by the 10-run rule. When it came down to it, there wasn't anyone else who was a greater crunch-time performer.

"My teammates aren't really emotional unless they see me, and it can pick them up," Phelps says. "We weren't the favorites, but we just had to play our ball." -
