Orem • Even a Class 4A state championship trophy looks small in Kayden Porter's arms. When he lifted it up to the crowd, the burly 6-foot-5 slugger did it effortlessly — much like his swings at the plate.

The Dons are sure to take away dozens of memories from their third title run in as many years, but Porter's uncanny knack for the long ball clearly stands out. The junior seemed "locked in," as coach "Shoe" Nelson said, and when he put bat to ball, his hits drew a collective gasp from the wide-eyed audience.

"I felt like I was seeing beach balls today, not baseballs," Porter said. "You get in this atmosphere, and the fans here and your teammates cheering you on — it just gets you pumped."

Porter pumped out big-time hits, including a 4-for-4 effort in Spanish Fork's first win, 12-7, against Snow Canyon. After a double in his first at-bat, Porter launched three straight homers off Warriors pitchers.

The first cleared the second fence on a hill about 50 feet past the left-field wall. It wasn't too surprising, then, that the second one he hit in the same direction landed in almost the same place.

But it was the third, dead ahead to center field, that offered a bit of suspense. Porter's last long shot of the day cleared not far from the flagpole. It gave the Dons a five-run lead and all but assured their first victory.

Porter was much quieter in the second game, a 9-0 victory for the Dons, going 1 for 3 with an intentional walk. But his one hit came off Riley Gates, the Warriors' left-handed ace. It initially looked like his fourth dinger of the day, but it fell a few feet short, giving him a stand-up triple.

"[Porter is] going to get his," Snow Canyon coach Reed Secrist said. "The one thing we did with him is we got behind in counts. And if you get behind in the count with a guy like him, he's going to sit back and destroy you." —
