Orem • There was no catching up to Danny Beddes' grand slam.
At least it seemed that way in the fourth inning Friday for American Fork, when the Cavemen scored six runs, capped by the grand slam, and took an intimidating 6-2 lead over Bingham in the 5A baseball championship.
"We had the chance," Beddes said after American Fork watched Bingham rally for eight runs in the final two innings to beat the Cavemen 10-6.
Into the fifth inning, with the Cavemen leading the way, it appeared there would be at least one more 5A game. American Fork advanced to the championship round after rebounding from a 7-0 shutout Thursday against the Miners.
The Cavemen had just two hits in their big fourth inning, but Bingham walked three batters and gave up a run by hitting a batter before Beddes stepped up.
He sent reliever Mason Marshall's pitch onto the berm beyond the left field wall.
"We got a little momentum and things were going good," coach Jared Ingersoll said. "It's hard to come up through that losers' bracket, you use all your pitching."
The Cavemen got a good performance, however, from starter Jeremy Reymonds. He pitched 51â3 innings and, through four, had allowed only four hits.
"With Jeremy on the mound," Beddes said, "We can beat anybody."
The Cavemen were attempting to win their first baseball title since 1985, when they were in 3A. American Fork finished its season 24-6, after entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed from Region 4.
