Orem • Mason Marshall told Bingham coach Joe Sato that he would pitch in the championship game despite having pitched a seven-inning shutout the day before. Sato, he said, didn't have a choice in the matter.
Maybe the senior was regretting his promise a bit as he watched American Fork's Danny Beddes launch a grand slam over the left-field fence, giving the Cavemen a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning.
But Marshall and the rest of the Miners pulled through, holding American Fork scoreless for the remainder of the game and came back to claim the Class 5A baseball title in a 10-6 victory.
"It's been my biggest dream to pitch in the championship game," Marshall said. "I was pretty upset about [the grand slam]. The kid just golf-swinged a curveball, but I just got back and found some movement. Our team came through."
The dream season came together at the end for the Miners, who launched a stunning eight-run rally in their final two innings at bat. Stefan Cantwell, who had started the game on the mound, gave Bingham a spark with a two-run homer over the center field wall.
Then, headed into the sixth trailing 6-5, the real fireworks went off. American Fork starter Jeremy Reynolds loaded the bases on a hit and two walks. Reliever Jake Miles walked in a run to tie the game, then Kobin Courtney busted it open with a two-RBI double.
It was a dramatic turn after the fourth inning, during which the Cavemen knocked in all six runs of their runs in the game, capped by Beddes' grand slam. Cantwell had finally lost some control after holding onto a 2-0 lead to that point.
"We all said, 'This is it, we're finishing this up in one game,' " Courtney said. "We knew we were coming back for sure. We definitely got some timely hits. We haven't done that a lot lately, but we got base hits when we needed to."
Matt Cluff and Bryson Benton also scored before the end of the inning, and Brady Lail closed out on the mound with a three-up, three-down seventh to win Bingham's first baseball title since 2003.
Watching his team come back was enough to make Sato tear up.
"Every year it's hard to see these kids go on," said Sato, who won his third title as a coach. "The way these kids played, our team has been as one. That's what carried us through."
Bingham's celebration surged out from the field onto the side lawn: The Miners dumped a water cooler on Sato, then went through one final team cheer, huddled up, arms on each other's backs.
"I'm a three-sport athlete, and I've played 12 seasons at Bingham this is my last season," Courtney said. "This team came together like none of the teams I've been on. We were tight-knit that's what made us win."
