Sandy • Like everyone else at Rio Tinto Stadium, Jaycson Yeates had no idea what happened  and he was the one who supposedly did it.
In overtime Thursday, Mountain Crest won the 4A state championship 2-1 over Mountain View. Yeates was credited with the 88th minute goal that came off a free kick. He said after the game that he got "the littlest flick" on the ball to head it high and into the net.
"I heard everyone start to scream," Yeates said, "and I turned to the net and saw it went in."
Photo sequences seen after the game appeared to show that the ball actually hit off the hands of Mountain View goalkeeper Keegan Black.
"I don't know that anybody knows how it went in," Mustangs coach Mike Gurney said. "But it went in, and that's what matters."
The winning goal was representative of Mountain Crest's run through the 4A tournament, one that came out of nowhere and, frankly, was a bit hard to figure out.
Entering the tournament, the Mustangs were 9-5-2 and the No. 3 seed from Region 5. Then, Mountain Crest drew Lehi, the defending state champion, in the first round. For most teams, that would be an unfavorable matchup, but not Mountain Crest, which had nearly upset the Pioneers in the preseason.
They did it in the first round, winning 2-0.
"I didn't think anything could stop us at that point," Yeates said.
Not even Mountain View, also a No. 3 seed, which played in the title game for the fourth time in five years. Yeates scored in the 42nd minute to break a scoreless halftime tie.
But Mountain View answered in the 73rd minute on a shot from sophomore Edgar Cordova, who also scored in the Bruins' semifinal win over Highland. In overtime, Mountain View was more aggressive and pounded hard shots at goalkeeper Tanner Collins.
Turns out, you don't have to shoot it hard to win a state title. Sometimes, all it takes is the littlest flick.
