Taylorsville • MaCauley Flint had pitched a good game for Roy, carrying a no-hitter against Riverton through the fifth inning. But the Royals were still knotted up 0-0 with the Silverwolves.
Flint decided she'd had enough of that in the sixth inning: She hit an RBI double, then scored herself to take a two-run lead that eventually became a 3-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 5A playoffs.
"It was time to open it up," the senior said. "I had walked twice, and I didn't think she was gonna walk me again, so I just waited for my pitch."
When Flint hit in Payton Palmer home, it broke open what had been arguably the best pitchers duel of the tournament. Both Flint and Riverton starter Courtnee Platt took no-nos through four innings, Platt striking out five and Flint striking out 13.
It was a frustrating offensive game for both teams.
"These girls are competitive, and they want to do well personally as well as with their team," said assistant coach Travis Flint. "I think these girls understand how great the competition will be tomorrow, and that we'll have to do better."
It had been a hectic day even before the game the Royals had loaded on a bus immediately after their graduation ceremony. MaCauley Flint said the excitement might have caused some jitters for Roy.
"We got on the bus, and our coaches said, 'OK, take a few minutes to get into softball mode,' " she said. "It was a big day for the seniors, and I think it took a little longer to wear off than it should have."
Murray 4, Taylorsville 2 • The Spartans' Malia Campos came up clutch, knocking in two runs in the fourth inning to break a 2-2 stalemate.
"I knew I had to get those runs in there had to be a way," said Campos, who also hit a triple in the game.
Elise Johnson locked down the Warriors' offense from the second inning on to put Murray in the winners' bracket final against Roy with a championship berth on the line.
Bingham 6, Brighton 0 • The defending champs shut down the Bengals with some high-powered pitching from Keegan Hanny to stay alive in the one-loss bracket.
Weber 10, Syracuse 0 • Weber knocked out the Titans in five innings as five Warriors doubled. Syracuse got only two hits, and McKenna Bull earned her second win of the day.
Syracuse 4, Skyline 3 • The Titans took a 4-1 lead in the second inning and held on to survive in the one-loss bracket in their first game of the day.
Bingham 7, West Jordan 1 • The Miners found their bats against starter Bree Ordiway, and Paige Reimann had a solid effort on the mound.
Weber 5, Davis 2 • Two late runs and a great pitching performance from McKenna Bull was enough to overcome the Region 1 rival Darts.
Brighton 5, Layton 1 • The Bengals prevailed in their first game, holding the Lancers to one run on four hits.
