Kearns • With a shake of his head and a shrug of his shoulders, Mountain Crest shortstop Chase Hansen did his best to sum up the wild conclusion to Wednesday night's Class 4A elimination game against Bonneville.
"It's just playoff baseball," the senior said.
The Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally for a wild 7-6 victory at Kearns High School. Bonneville had rallied from a 5-0 deficit and took the lead in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by senior Sam Hall.
Hall was on the mound to close it in the seventh, but a single by Hansen his third hit of the game a sacrifice and a walk set the stage for the comeback.
Mountain Crest's Matt Lewis hit a ground ball to second that scooted through the legs of Jack Hall, allowing Hansen to score. Three batters later, Greg Jorgensen drew a bases-loaded walk to end it.
"I turned just as it went through," Hansen said. "It's crazy."
Mountain Crest (20-7), which overcame a dramatic loss to East earlier in the day on a walkoff home run, advanced to meet Spanish Fork at 9 a.m. today at Utah Valley University.
It was the Mustangs' third victory against Bonneville (20-8) this season, but proved the toughest of the three. Mountain Crest won the first two games by a combined score of 34-9.
"They made the mistake, and we capitalized on it," Mountain Crest coach Steve Hansen said.
Mountain Crest chased Bonneville starting pitcher Bryan Heward in the first inning and turned four walks into three runs. The Mustangs added to their lead in the third inning on a two-run double by Hansen.
But Bonneville rallied for four in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double by Sam Hall and a run-scoring singles by Logan Jugler and Kyle Thompson. But the rally ended with the bases loaded when Mustangs catcher Tyler Root tracked down a passed ball and caught Thompson too far off third base.
