Kearns • What started out as a good day for Salem Hills shortstop JC Snyder became one of the best performances of his career as the Skyhawks defeated Lehi 11-7 in the Class 4A state baseball quarterfinals.
Snyder hit a home run off the first pitch Lehi's Kaldyn Langman threw, and it only got better after that. The senior finished the game 3-for-3, including two crucial singles in the second and fourth innings to keep Salem Hills alive with his team down to their last out in the innings.
"Well, honestly, I've had some good players through the years, but as far as baseball instincts and just knowing the game no one does a better job," coach Scott Haney said. "I mean, he just knows this game."
It was an offensive explosion by both teams. Kade Evans got Lehi on the board with a two-run single in the second, while Salem Hills' Jordan Jensen added a three-run blast in the fourth.
There were 22 hits between the teams during a game that lasted nearly four hours.
With the game still in doubt, Haney turned Snyder, moving him to the pitching mound in the top of the sixth, resulting in a 1-2-3 inning.
It was still close, 9â7, in the bottom of the sixth when junior left fielder Kirk Haney stepped to the plate and hit a hard line drive down the left-field line to put Salem Hills ahead 11â7 and seal the victory.
The Skyhawks face the loser of Snow Canyon and Spanish Fork on Wednesday, and may face some fatigue going into the matchup. Still, Haney said he believes if his team takes it one day at a time, they could find themselves playing for a championship.
"Whatever we've got to do, we're going to come here and have fun," Haney said. "Our goal is to be playing all week and to be there at the finish, and if we have to play a bunch of games to do it, we'll do it."
Bonneville 12, Westlake 6 • Bonneville pitcher Evan Parker hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Jack Hall added a two-run homer in the seventh to cement the game for the Lakers.
