For once, Brighton and Alta aren't the focus of the 5A soccer tournament.
The fierce Region 4 rivals, and the state's most respected programs, will play semifinal games Tuesday in the 5A tournament, but all attention is on Alta's nationally ranked opponent: Viewmont.
Viewmont is 16-0-2, the only unbeaten team in 5A and ranked No. 15 in the country by ESPN.com.
That said, the Vikings, who beat Pleasant Grove and Riverton in the first two rounds, are not expecting to cruise to Thursday's championship. Alta, by the way, is ranked No. 33 by ESPN.
"I don't really think about us being the top," senior defender Brock Buckway said, "because if I think about Alta, it's such a known school throughout Utah and when you think of Viewmont, it's not that known of a school."
The Vikings have been in the state title game three times since 2003, and have been in the tournament each year since 2002.
The winner of Alta/Viewmont will play Thursday at Rio Tinto Stadium against either Murray or Brighton, which play Tuesday at Woods Cross High School.
4A semifinals
Highland is the last remaining team from the state's best league, Region 6, but the third-seeded Rams will have a tough road to the 4A title, which starts Tuesday with Mountain View.
Region 9 Dixie is the only No. 1 seed left in the 4A tournament, and the Flyers will play Mountain Crest.
The Mustangs advanced to the semifinals after knocking off No. 1 seeds Lehi, the defending state champs, and Springville. Both games were on the road.
