Roy • By 5 p.m., the rain had started coming down. But the Roy softball team had already done its work.
The Royals wasted no time in dispatching Lone Peak 13-0 in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. Meeting at Roy West Park, it took only an hour and a half for the dominant pitching of MaCauley Flint and the fiery Roy offense to take out the overmatched Knights.
It was the only 4A or 5A softball game played in the state, and it had been rained out twice before. To hear it from the Royals, they were ready to take out their frustration on somebody.
"It's been a week since we've played a game, and I think we came out hard," Flint said. "We didn't want to get rained out again, so when we heard we were playing today, we said, 'Let's get this done fast.' "
Flint certainly was efficient, striking out seven and allowing only one hit. Only two Knights were able to reach first base in the game.
And Roy backed up their ace with plenty of run support, racking up 10 runs in the first two innings alone. The Royals rattled starter Allyse Chipman early, forcing Lone Peak to pull her in the first in favor of Lauren Gourdin.
"Our mentality is to score, score, score," said shortstop Jordan Barrera, who hit three doubles on the day. "I think we had a lot of enthusiasm today, and it helped us start out strong."
Things never really got better for the Knights, and at the top of the fifth, when they had to score at least four runs to keep the game going, it was three up and three down.
All in all, it was a strong outing for Roy, which will go on to face Bingham on Friday, weather permitting. And the whole Royals roster is crossing their fingers for sunshine and a rematch with the Miners, who beat them twice in last season's championship.
"Oh man, it's definitely exciting," Barrera said. "We cannot wait to get them back."
