Spanish Fork • The urgency for Abby Bayles and Kelsi Meyer was real.

The only seniors for San Juan's softball team, the two had been real contributors for the Broncos as freshmen on their 2008 championship team. Then came disappointment for two consecutive years as San Juan fell short in its bid to add trophies to the mantle.

On Saturday afternoon, the disappointment turned to elation for both girls as the Broncos defeated Grand 6-1 to win the Class 2A state championship at Spanish Fork Field.

"We've been anxious for this moment all season," Bayles said. "This is what we've wanted, and we didn't want to come up short this season."

Saturday's win caps what was a dominant tournament for a San Juan team that's been sensational for the entire year. The Broncos, in their playoff run, outscored their opponents by a combined 40-4. They've beaten Grand twice in two days, and only twice have they failed to score less than 10 runs.

Not a team for drama, San Juan used a five-RBI day from sophomore L'Sha Eldrege to pull away. After a lengthy rain and lightning delay, Eldrege hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the third inning. She was the first batter up following the delay.

She wasn't done. A two-run single extended San Juan's advantage to 6-0. It was a hit that allowed the Broncos to sit back and rely on the pitching of Bayles for the remainder of the game. The senior responded by limiting the Red Devils to a single run while pitching a complete game.

"We practiced on hitting and we knew that a team as good as Grand was going to give us a challenge," San Juan head coach Craig Swenson said. "We knew that we had to score as many runs as possible. We couldn't coast against them. These girls really earned this one. They played extremely well, and Abby pitched a great game." —
