Sandy • The shot that propelled St. Joseph to the 2A soccer championship game wasn't meant to be a shot at all.
"I was trying to serve it," Dino Soto said.
That explains why Soto hardly celebrated his 67th-minute goal, his second in the Jayhawks' 3-2 win over South Summit on Friday. Instead, he stood for a moment, very near the corner of the field, and put his hands on his head.
Whatever works. His shot nicked the crossbar before dropping into the goal, completing a remarkable turnaround for St. Joseph, which had trailed just two minutes earlier.
St. Joseph will play in the 2A title game Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
"I really thought we had the run of the possession the whole game," coach Derek Tate said.
But after each team scored in the 40th minute to go into halftime with a 1-1 draw, South Summit came out stronger. Wildcats midfielder Pat Schultz made a penalty kick in the 42nd minute and, for the next half hour, it seemed the goal would hold.
St. Joseph, however, got a penalty kick of its own, from Andy Brodstein in the 65th minute. On their next trip down the field, Soto gave the Jayhawks the lead.
"It feels great," Soto said. "It was what we were working for."
Waterford 2, Rowland Hall 1 • Waterford entered the 2A tournament with a new coach, a losing record and uncharacteristically low expectations.
The Ravens will leave the tournament through the gates of Rio Tinto Stadium.
The defending champion Ravens are headed back to the 2A championship game.
Longtime coach Bob Capener is gone, but his replacement, Tim Dolbin, has his team playing its best of the year.
The No. 3 seed from Region 14, Waterford on Friday beat a Rowland Hall team had beaten the Ravens by a combined score of 9-1 in two previous meetings.
"I felt sick all day, but I knew we could do it," sophomore forward Josh Warner said. "I wanted to beat them so bad."
Warner scored the first of Waterford's two first-half goals that set the tone for the win.
