There would be no overtime Tuesday at Highland.
In a boys' soccer game dominated by missed opportunities and critical to region standings, all it took was one, simple shot to separate Bountiful from Highland.
It came from Bountiful's Manny Duenas in stoppage time, as the diminutive midfielder weaved his way past the Rams' defenders, took a pass from Taylor Egbert and shot a looping kick past goalkeeper Hayes Hicken. It gave Bountiful a 1-0 win and a chance to win the region championship.
"I knew what I was doing the whole time," said Duenas, a senior. "I knew I was going to dribble in, cut the kid, and just shoot."
It was so simple, but a feat that had eluded both the Braves and Rams, knotted with two other teams atop the Region 6 standings, through more than 80 minutes of play.
At halftime, after watching his team possess well but fail to score, Bountiful coach Lou Plank had a simple message for his players.
No adjustments. They were doing everything right and would not be making any changes.
"I was telling them at halftime that this house of cards was just waiting to go," Plank said.
It nearly did, but not in Bountiful's favor.
At the beginning of the second half, a Highland free kick from midfield bounced over the Braves' goalkeeper, and off the crossbar. Two other shots trickled just wide. Still, Bountiful was patient, confident its attacks would pay off.
"I thought the opportunities we generated were much more concerted," Plank said. "Better developed."
Bountiful will win Region 6 and take a No. 1 seed into the 4A tournament with a win or a draw Friday against rival Woods Cross.
