An 81-year-old man has died of injuries sustained in a Tuesday house fire in southeast Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Tom Burckhard confirmed Wednesday that John Newsome, who was the lone occupant of the home at 665 Wilson Ave. (1750 South), died late Tuesday, several hours after being rushed to Salt Lake Regional Medical Center in very critical condition.

Burckhard said that Newsome was found by responding firefighters in another room in the house, unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse. Paramedics were able to restore his heartbeat and place him on a ventilator, but he later passed away, the apparent victim of smoke inhalation.
The cause of the 11:30 a.m. Tuesday fire, which began in the home’s main level bedroom, remained under investigation. Damages were still being assessed on Wednesday.
