A winter weather advisory was in effect for much of northern and central Utah going into Thursday, with high winds, valley rains and blowing mountain snow predicted.

The National Weather Service said the advisory stretched from Logan running south through Ogden, Salt Lake City, Park City, Provo and Nephi. Meantime, forecasters warned of winds gusting above 60 mph at times along Interstate 80 near the Wyoming border. Stiff winds also were predicted for northwestern stretches of I-84 and Highway 30, as well as the Uinta Basin and beginning late Wednesday into Thursday, across southwestern Utah as well.

The NWS specifically issued high-wind warnings for northwestern Utah’s desert with gusts up to 40 mph expected. Wind advisories also were issued for the Duchesne and Price areas, in eastern and central Utah, respectively, with winds og up to 45 mph gusting over 65 mph.

Another cold Pacific storm surge was expected to move into the region late Thursday and persist into the weekend, bringing more snow to the Wasatch Front by Saturday.

The Utah Avalanche Center put the risk for potentially deadly snow slides at "orange," or considerable, for all mountain slopes in the state.

Air quality grades statewide were "green," or satisfactory, according to the Utah Division of Environmental Quality.

Salt Lake City’s high for Thursday was forecast at 41 degrees, markedly down from Wednesday’s expected 57-degree high; Ogden looked for 39 and 55 degrees; Provo 39 and 55; Logan 37 and 53; Wendover 40 and 54; Duchesne 38 and 49; Cedar City 41 and 55; St. George 58 and 68; and Moab 46 and 55 degrees.
