Feb. 21 » It was supposed to be Michelle Kwan vs. Irina Slutskaya. But American teen-ager Sarah Hughes stunningly crashes the party coming from fourth place to win gold in women’s figure skating, when Kwan, Slutskaya and Sasha Cohen all struggle in the free skate. Austria’s Stephen Eberharter wins gold in the giant slalom after previously settling for silver and bronze, while American Bode Miller takes his second silver of the Games. Great Britain finally strikes gold in women’s curling, the Germans win the women’s cross country relay after the Russians are disqualified for doping, and Team Canada beats the U.S. 3-2 to win the gold in women’s hockey.
