There are four play-in games before the 4A and 5A girls' basketball playoffs begin next week. Taking a quick glance at these match-ups:
Region 1 — Fremont v. Davis (Thursday at Davis, 5:15 p.m.): The Silver Wolves had a lackluster season after reaching the semifinals last year, and now find themselves scrambling for their playoff future. Davis was able to beat Fremont in their most recent contest, 53-42, to force the play-in. The Darts need Courtney Hurst to play her best, while the Silver Wolves could use a spark of urgency since they'll be on the road again.
Region 2 — Viewmont v. Granger (Friday at West, 5 p.m.): This is sure to be close — the team's first two games were decided by three points and five points respectively. The Vikings lost the more recent leg at Granger, as Lile Havili scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for the Lancers in a 47-42 win. Granger has also played a bit stronger as the season comes to a close, winning three of its last five. Viewmont lost four in a row before beating bottom-ranked West, while the Lancers scored their final victory over second-place Hunter.
Region 3 — Copper Hills v. Cottonwood (Thursday at Jordan, 6 p.m.): The Colts topped Copper Hills 43-35 in their last meeting, but haven't been so hot since then. Cottonwood ended the season on a four-game losing streak, even losing a game to last-place Jordan. The Grizzlies haven't exactly been inspiring this season either, but they've been close to their competition in recent weeks. If not for a buzzer-beater by West Jordan, they'd be in the playoffs already. Desirae Cruse and Savannah Sandberg should be a headache for Cottonwood.
Region 6 — East v. Clearfield (Thursday at Woods Cross, 4 p.m.): Credit East for coming away with a pair of close wins in its last two games to force the playoff. The Leopards especially got help from Ata Utone, who has suddenly become a compliment to leading scorer Madison Roemer. East has come a long way, but it remains to be seen if they can get another win over the Falcons. Clearfield only lost by a point last week to the Leopards, and scored only three points in the fourth quarter. That kind of offensive flub seems like it won't be duplicated.
